Andrew Moreno is a Mallorcan–Rotterdam–based Venezuelan guitarist and composer. His work explores the dualism between intricately composed material and free improvisation within non-idiomatic environments.
He has performed internationally across Europe, the Americas, Africa, and Asia. Among his active projects is the Netherlands-based trio Axiom, featuring Tristan Renfrow and Jonathan Ho, with guest appearances by Bo van der Werf and Tineke Postma on the trio’s debut recording. As a sideman, Andrew collaborates extensively with projects such as TRYON, PIN, and FraFra Sound, among others.
Andrew began his musical journey independently at the age of nine, immersing himself in the jazz scene of Caracas, Venezuela. This led to several years (2016–2018) of performing as a core member of various ensembles and orchestras throughout the country, including the Simón Bolívar Big Band Jazz at the Simón Bolívar Conservatory, part of El Sistema.
At eighteen, due to the political and economic crisis in Venezuela, he relocated to Mallorca, Spain. There, he became active in a wide range of musical contexts, performing jazz, rock, African music, and free improvisation, among other genres. After establishing himself as a full-time sideman in Spain, Andrew decided to pursue formal academic studies. He was subsequently admitted to Codarts Rotterdam Conservatory, where he completed his Bachelor’s degree in Jazz Guitar, and he is currently completing a Master’s degree in Jazz Performance at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.
Since 2020, Andrew has been mentored by musicians such as Bill Frisell, Nelson Veras, Kaja Draksler, Tony Malaby, Michael Moore, Lage Lund, Stefan Lievestro, Jesse van Ruller, and Reinier Baas.
He has performed internationally with artists including Miles Okazaki, Brian Charette, Bo van der Werf, Tineke Postma, Jasper Blom, Jasper Stadhouders, Ernst Glerum, Jeremy Viner, John Dikeman, Lucija Gregov, Jonathon Haffner, Andrés Briceño, Ada Rave, Tristan Renfrow, Bart Maris, Wilbert de Joode, and Theo Jörgensmann, among many others.
Andrew has appeared at venues such as Loft Köln (DE), LantarenVenster (NL), De Doelen (NL), Bimhuis (NL), TivoliVredenburg (NL), Brebl (NL), Spatif (PL), Sounds (BE), Paradox (NL), and Opus Jazz Club (HU).
His festival appearances include North Sea Jazz Festival (2022–2024), Injazz (2022), What’s Next (2021), Breda Jazz Festival (2021), Grächen Jazz Festival (2022), and North Sea Around Town (2022–2024). In 2024, his trio won a €3,000 prize and performed as a headline act at the North Sea Jazz Festival the same year.
